What is this calculator?

Screens are sold by diagonal inches, which hides how much picture you actually get. A 16:9 set and a 21:9 set with the same diagonal have very different areas. This calculator converts both diagonals into real width, height and viewing area so you can see which screen is genuinely bigger and by how much.

How does it work?

For an aspect ratio of w:h, the diagonal splits into width and height using Pythagoras. Multiplying width by height gives the viewing area in square inches, and comparing the two areas gives the difference and the percentage change from the first screen to the second.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a 65-inch screen so much bigger than a 55-inch?+

Area grows with the square of the diagonal. At the same aspect ratio, 65 inches gives roughly 40% more picture than 55 inches.

Does aspect ratio really change the size?+

Yes. At an identical diagonal, a 21:9 ultrawide is wider but shorter and has less total area than a 16:9 panel.

Is the diagonal measured with the bezel?+

No. Manufacturers quote the visible panel diagonal, corner to corner, excluding the frame.

Which ratio should I pick for a TV?+

16:9 covers almost all broadcast and streaming content. 21:9 suits cinema and PC gaming but letterboxes normal video.

How far should I sit?+

A common rule of thumb for a 4K TV is a viewing distance of about 1 to 1.5 times the screen width.
