What is this calculator?

A backpack always feels heavier than you expect, because the weight is spread across a dozen small things. This calculator adds the empty pack to the contents you are carrying, shows the loaded total in both pounds and kilograms, and expresses it as a share of your body weight so you can picture the load you are actually walking around with.

How does it work?

The empty pack weight is added to the total contents weight, either entered directly or as an item count times an average item weight. Dividing the loaded total by your body weight gives the percentage figure, which is shown for interest only and is not medical guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include the empty pack?+

Yes. A sturdy daypack is one to three pounds on its own, and a hiking pack can be four or five before anything goes inside.

Is the body weight percentage medical advice?+

No. It is shown for interest only. If a load causes pain or numbness, speak to a professional rather than relying on a percentage.

How do I weigh a backpack at home?+

Stand on a bathroom scale holding the pack, note the number, then step off, weigh yourself alone and subtract.

What is the heaviest thing in most backpacks?+

Water and laptops. A litre of water is about 2.2 pounds and a laptop plus charger is often four.

Can I mix pounds and kilograms?+

No — enter every figure in the same unit. The results panel converts the total into both for you.
