What is this calculator?

This calculator estimates your lifetime blink count and, more oddly, how much time you have spent with your eyes closed because of it. Enter your birthday, your blink rate and your waking hours, and you get totals for your life, each year and each day. It is a memorable statistic for classrooms, and a nudge for anyone who stares at screens all day.

How does it work?

Blinks per minute are multiplied by your waking minutes each day, then by the days you have been alive. For time spent with eyes closed, we assume each blink lasts about 0.15 seconds. Blink rate changes with reading, screens and mood, so the total is an approximation.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the estimate exclude sleep?+

Blinking is a waking behaviour — during sleep your eyelids stay closed, so only the hours you are awake count towards the total.

Do screens really change my blink rate?+

Yes. Concentrated visual tasks such as reading or gaming can cut blink rate by more than half, which contributes to dry, tired eyes.

Why do we blink so much more than we need to?+

Beyond lubricating the eye, blinks appear to give the brain micro-pauses that help with attention and processing what you have just seen.

How accurate is this number?+

It is a ballpark. Blink rate varies with mood, medication, humidity and what you are doing, so treat the result as a fun order-of-magnitude estimate.
