What is this calculator?

This calculator turns your nightly routine into a lifetime total. Enter your age and your typical hours of sleep, and it shows the years, days and hours you have spent asleep, plus the share of your life that represents. It is handy if you are rethinking your bedtime, testing a new sleep habit, or settling an argument about whether early nights are time well spent.

How does it work?

We multiply your average nightly hours by the number of days you have been alive, then convert the total into years and days. Sleep needs change a lot across a lifetime, so one steady average is used throughout. Expect roughly a third of your life to land in the sleep column.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours should I actually sleep?+

Most adults do best with 7 to 9 hours. Consistency of bedtime matters nearly as much as total duration.

Does napping count?+

Add your typical nap time into the hours-per-night field if you want it included — the maths only sees a single daily total.

Is sleeping a third of my life wasted time?+

Not remotely. Sleep is when memory gets consolidated, tissue repairs and the brain's waste-clearing system does most of its work.

Why does the result change slightly through the day?+

The tool counts elapsed time down to the current moment, so the totals creep upward as the day goes on.
