What is this calculator?

This calculator estimates the total number of heartbeats behind you. You give it your date of birth and your average resting heart rate, and it returns your lifetime total plus the beats racked up today and this year. It is a quick way to picture the scale of something your body does constantly without you noticing, and it works just as well for curious kids as for runners tracking their pulse.

How does it work?

We count the days between your birthday and today, multiply by the 1,440 minutes in a day, then multiply by your beats per minute. Real heart rates rise with exercise and drop in sleep, so the flat average smooths everything out. The answer is a solid estimate, not a medical measurement.

Frequently asked questions

Why 70 beats per minute?+

It is the midpoint of the standard adult resting range of 60 to 100 bpm. If you know your own resting rate from a watch or a doctor's visit, type it in for a closer estimate.

Does this account for childhood heart rates?+

No. Babies and young children beat much faster — often 100 to 160 bpm — so the true total for younger years is higher than the flat average shown here.

Do we all get a fixed number of heartbeats?+

It is a fun idea from animal biology, where smaller, faster-hearted species tend to live shorter lives. In humans it doesn't hold up: fitter people with slower hearts generally live longer, not shorter.

Is anything I type saved?+

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and your birthday never leaves your device.
