What is this calculator?

Airline baggage fees are charged at the counter, when it is too late to repack. This calculator totals every bag you plan to check plus an optional personal item, compares that against your airline's stated limit, and tells you exactly how much allowance is left or how many pounds you need to pull out before you get to the desk.

How does it work?

Bag weight is multiplied by the number of bags, then the personal item is added on. That total is compared with your airline limit to give the remaining allowance and the percentage used. If the total exceeds the limit, the difference becomes the suggested amount to remove.

Frequently asked questions

Is the limit per bag or for all bags?+

Airlines set the limit per checked bag. This calculator multiplies your stated limit by the number of bags to give a total allowance.

Does my personal item count?+

Usually not toward the checked allowance, but it is included here so you know the full weight you are hauling. Set it to zero to exclude it.

What is a typical checked bag limit?+

Fifty pounds, or about twenty-three kilograms, is the common economy limit in the US. Many international carriers use the same figure.

How accurate is my bathroom scale?+

Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the bag and subtract. It is usually within a pound, which is close enough to avoid a fee.

What happens if I am over the limit?+

Most airlines charge an overweight fee, often more than the cost of a second bag. Moving a few heavy items into your carry-on usually solves it.
