What is this calculator?
A pencil is the kind of thing you never count, which is exactly why the lifetime total is surprising. This calculator takes the number you get through in a typical week and scales it up into a yearly figure, a per-decade figure and a full-life estimate, then splits that into the pencils behind you and the ones still waiting to be sharpened.
How does it work?
Weekly use is multiplied by 52.18 to get a yearly figure, then by ten for a decade. Lifetime pencils are the yearly figure across your expected lifespan, and remaining pencils cover the years between your current age and that lifespan.

How long does one pencil last?+
A standard HB pencil writes roughly 45,000 words, or about 35 miles of line, before it is a stub. Heavy sharpeners get through them far faster.
Does sharpening waste much pencil?+
Yes. Sharpening removes wood and graphite, and most pencils are abandoned as a short stub, so real-world use is well below the theoretical maximum.
