What is this calculator?

The remote is never where you left it, and every hunt costs a couple of minutes of cushion lifting. This calculator takes how often you search each week and how long a typical search lasts, then converts that small recurring annoyance into hours per year and a full lifetime figure.

How does it work?

Weekly searches are multiplied by 52.18 for a yearly count, then by your average search time to give minutes and hours per year. Those yearly numbers are applied to the years you have already lived and to the years remaining before your expected lifespan.

Frequently asked questions

How often do people lose the remote?+

Surveys of TV households often report a few hunts a week, which is why three is the default here.

What counts as a search?+

Any time you have to actively look for the remote rather than pick it up from where you expected it.

Should I include other remotes?+

Yes, if you search for them. Add streaming stick and soundbar remotes to your weekly figure.

Does the lifetime figure include my past?+

Yes. It applies your current rate to the years you have lived and the years you have left.

How can I lower the number?+

A fixed remote spot or a tracker tag removes most of the searching. This tool just shows what it is costing you.
