What is this calculator?

Keys vanish into coat pockets, sofa cushions and the wrong bag, and each search costs a few tense minutes. This calculator converts how often you lose them and how long each hunt lasts into yearly and lifetime hours.

How does it work?

Weekly searches are multiplied by 52.18 to get a yearly count, then by your average search time for minutes and hours per year. Those rates are applied to the years you have lived and the years left before your expected lifespan.

Frequently asked questions

How often do people misplace their keys?+

A couple of times a week is common. If you have a fixed hook by the door, your number will be far lower.

What counts as a search?+

Any time you cannot immediately put your hand on your keys and have to look, even if it only takes thirty seconds.

How long is a typical hunt?+

Four minutes is a reasonable default. Frantic pre-work searches can run much longer.

Would a key tracker change the result?+

Usually yes. Try lowering the average search time to a minute to see the difference a tracker makes.

Is the lifetime total exact?+

No. It projects your current rate of losing keys across your whole life, so treat it as a rough but honest estimate.
