What is this calculator?

Channel surfing is the great unmeasured hobby. This calculator combines how often you change channel each day with how many channels you skip in one go, then projects the total you have scrolled past and the total still to come.

How does it work?

Channel changes per day times channels skipped per change gives a daily total, multiplied by 365.25 for a year. Applying that to your years lived and the years left before your expected lifespan gives lifetime and remaining totals.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as scrolling past a channel?+

Every channel that appears on screen while you hunt for something to watch, whether you pause on it or not.

How many channel changes are typical?+

Around thirty a day for regular viewers. Holding the button down to surf quickly pushes it far higher.

Why include channels skipped per change?+

Holding the up button skips several channels at once, so counting only button presses badly undercounts the total.

Does streaming count?+

You can use it that way — treat each row of thumbnails you scroll past as a batch of channels.

How accurate is the lifetime number?+

It projects your current surfing habit across your whole life, so it is an estimate meant for fun.
