What is this calculator?

Lifts, kitchens and checkout counters all run on the same short script. This calculator takes how many small-talk conversations you have each week and how long an average one lasts, then turns that into hours a year, lifetime hours and whole days of polite chat.

How does it work?

Conversations per week times average length gives minutes per week. That is scaled by 52.18 into hours per year, then applied to the years you have already lived and the years still ahead, with days found by dividing the hours by 24.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as small talk?+

Any short, low-stakes exchange: weather, weekend plans, the commute, or a quick “how are you?” in a corridor.

How many small-talk conversations is normal?+

Around ten to fifteen a week for most people. Office workers and anyone customer-facing land far higher.

Why use 52.18 weeks?+

A year is 365.25 days, which is 52.18 weeks. It keeps yearly totals accurate rather than rounding to 52.

Is small talk actually wasted time?+

Not at all. It builds trust and eases people into real conversation — this is a curiosity total, not a criticism.

How accurate is the lifetime figure?+

It projects today's habit across every year of your life, so treat it as a playful estimate.
