What is this calculator?

Flushing is one of the most repeated actions of a modern life, and each one sends water down the drain. This calculator counts your lifetime flushes and turns them into the total water used, shown in gallons or litres.

How does it work?

Flushes per day times 365.25 gives flushes per year, projected across the years lived and the years ahead. Multiplying by the volume of a single flush converts that count into total water use in your chosen unit.

Frequently asked questions

How many times a day do people flush?+

Most adults use the toilet six to eight times a day, so five to eight flushes daily is a common range.

How much water does one flush use?+

Modern US toilets are rated at 1.6 gallons (about 6 litres) per flush. Older models can use 3.5 gallons or more, while dual-flush toilets can drop below one gallon.

Can I switch between gallons and litres?+

Yes. Choose your unit and the volume field and water totals update to match, with gallons shown by default.

Does this include flushes away from home?+

It should. Enter your total daily flushes wherever they happen โ€” home, work, cafes and everywhere else.

Why is my lifetime water number so large?+

Because a small volume repeated tens of thousands of times adds up. That is exactly why low-flow toilets save so much.

Is the result exact?+

No. It assumes a steady daily habit and one flush volume, so treat it as a well-informed estimate.
