What is this calculator?

Pushing a door marked pull, walking into the wrong meeting room, tugging a locked entrance with total confidence. This calculator takes how often that happens to you each week and projects the yearly and lifetime totals, plus the seconds lost to each moment of realization.

How does it work?

Weekly attempts times 52.18 gives attempts per year. That is applied to the years you have already lived and the years left to your expected lifespan, then multiplied by your average realization time to convert attempts into total time.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a wrong-door attempt?+

Pushing a door marked pull, tugging a locked entrance, opening the wrong room, or trying the wrong car door in a car park — anything that ends with a small pause and a correction.

Why does this happen so often?+

Doors give poor visual cues. Flat plates suggest pushing, handles suggest pulling, and designers frequently mix them up. Your brain acts on the cue before reading the sign.

How many times a week is normal?+

Two to five is typical for someone moving through offices, shops and public buildings. Working from home lowers it a lot.

What should I put for realization time?+

Usually three to five seconds — the moment of confusion, the correction, and the quick glance around to see who noticed.

Does the time figure include embarrassment?+

Only the physical pause. The lingering self-consciousness is, sadly, not measurable in seconds.

Is this result exact?+

No. It projects a steady weekly rate over your whole lifespan, so treat it as a playful estimate.
