What is this calculator?

You went for milk. You came home with everything except milk. This calculator uses how often you shop and how often something gets left behind to estimate lifetime forgotten-item trips and the extra journeys they cause.

How does it work?

Trips per week times 52.18 gives trips per year, and your forgetting rate turns that into forgotten-item trips. Those are projected across the years lived and remaining, then multiplied by how often a forgotten item triggers a return trip.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I always forget one item?+

Shopping relies on working memory, which reliably drops items once a list passes about five things. Distraction in the aisle finishes the job.

What percentage of trips is realistic?+

Around a quarter of unlisted trips end with something missing. With a written or app-based list the rate drops sharply.

What counts as an extra trip?+

Any journey made specifically because something was left behind, whether the same day or later in the week.

Does a shopping list really help?+

Yes. Writing items down offloads them from memory, and checking the list at the register catches most misses before you leave.

Does this include online orders?+

Only if you count them as trips. The forgetting rate for online baskets is usually lower because the list stays visible.

Is the lifetime number exact?+

No. It projects today's shopping habits across your whole life, so treat it as a playful estimate.
