What is this calculator?
Buying fencing means knowing the perimeter, not the area. This calculator takes the length and width of a rectangular or square yard, subtracts the width of any gates or openings, and adds an optional allowance for offcuts and mistakes so the number you take to the store is the number you actually need.
How does it work?
The perimeter of a rectangle is twice the length plus twice the width. Gate count times gate width is subtracted from that figure, then the extra allowance percentage is applied to the remainder to give the total material to order.

Should I subtract gates from my order?+
Subtract the opening, then buy the gate separately. Gates are sold as units, not as fence panels.
How much waste allowance is sensible?+
Five to ten percent covers most offcuts. Go higher on sloped or irregular ground.
How many posts will I need?+
Divide the fence length by your post spacing, usually six to eight feet, then add one for the final post plus two per gate.
What about an L-shaped yard?+
Split it into rectangles, run each through the calculator, then subtract any shared edge you will not fence.
Do I need to check property lines?+
Yes. Confirm boundaries and local setback rules before ordering material or digging post holes.
