What is this calculator?
Page counts say very little about time. This calculator converts pages into total words, then into reading time in minutes, hours and days at your own reading speed. It also splits the book into sessions based on how many minutes you read each day, so you can see how long that novel really is before you start it.
How does it work?
Pages are multiplied by average words per page to get total words. Dividing by your words-per-minute speed gives reading minutes, which convert into hours and days. Your daily reading minutes then divide the total to estimate how many sittings the book will take.
Frequently asked questions
What is an average reading speed?+
Most adults read between 200 and 300 words per minute for general fiction. Dense non-fiction is usually slower.
Why 300 words per page?+
It is a common average for a standard paperback. Large print runs closer to 200, and dense hardbacks can exceed 400.
Does it work for audiobooks?+
Not directly. Narration runs around 150 words per minute, so set the speed to 150 for a rough listening estimate.
Are the days figure realistic?+
The days figure is continuous non-stop reading. The sessions number is the practical one for real life.
Should I subtract skimming?+
If you skim, raise your words per minute. The calculator only uses the speed you enter.
