What is this calculator?

Socks disappear quietly and get replaced without much thought. This calculator adds them up, turning the pairs you buy each year and how long each pair lasts into the number of pairs in rotation, the pairs you will get through in a lifetime, how many are still ahead of you and the total count of individual socks.

How does it work?

Pairs bought per year sets your annual usage. The lifespan in months tells us how many pairs are in active rotation at any time. Multiplying yearly usage by your age and by your expected lifespan gives the pairs used so far, the lifetime total and the remaining pairs, then doubled for single socks.

Frequently asked questions

How many pairs of socks do people buy a year?+

Somewhere between five and fifteen pairs is typical, depending on how much you walk, run or wear boots.

How long should a pair last?+

Everyday cotton socks often thin out within a year. Thicker wool or running socks can last two or three.

What does pairs in rotation mean?+

Roughly how many wearable pairs you own at once, based on how many you buy a year and how long each pair survives.

Does it count lost socks?+

Only if you include them in your yearly purchases, which most people do without realising it.

Why double for individual socks?+

Every pair is two socks, so the single-sock total is simply the lifetime pairs multiplied by two.
