What is this calculator?

Standing desks are easy to buy and hard to picture the payoff of. This calculator turns your work hours, your working days and the share of the day you stand into weekly, yearly and lifetime standing hours, plus the sitting hours you would replace by staying on your feet.

How does it work?

Work hours per day times days per week gives your working week, and the standing percentage takes a slice of it. That weekly slice is scaled across 52.18 weeks a year and your expected lifespan, then converted into days. Replaced sitting hours match the standing total.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I stand at a desk?+

Most guidance suggests alternating, aiming for two to four hours of standing across an eight-hour day rather than standing all day.

Does standing burn many more calories?+

Only slightly, around 8 to 10 extra calories an hour. The main benefits are posture and movement rather than weight loss.

What counts as work time here?+

The hours you are actually at your desk, not the full workday including commuting or meetings away from it.

What are replaced sitting hours?+

Every hour you spend standing is an hour you would otherwise have been sitting, so the two totals match.

Is the lifetime figure realistic?+

It assumes you keep the same routine for life, including years after retirement, so treat it as a scale comparison rather than a plan.
