What is this calculator?

Bookshelves fill up faster than anyone expects. This calculator uses the width of your shelf, how many shelves you have and the average thickness of a book to estimate books per shelf, total capacity, the shelf space you own and how much room is left for new arrivals.

How does it work?

Shelf width divided by average book thickness gives the books that fit on one shelf, rounded down. Multiplying by the number of shelves gives total capacity. Your current book count is converted back into space used, and the difference is the room you still have.

Frequently asked questions

How thick is an average book?+

A typical paperback is about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick. Hardbacks run closer to 1.5 inches, and slim novels can be half of that.

Should I measure the shelf inside or outside?+

Measure the usable space between the uprights. The outer frame width would overstate how many books actually fit.

Does it account for leaning books or bookends?+

No. The estimate assumes books stand upright side by side, so leave a little slack for bookends and gaps.

Can I mix inches and centimeters?+

Use one unit for both width and thickness. The selector switches the labels for every measurement at once.

What if I stack books flat?+

Flat stacks fit differently. This calculator is built for the standard upright arrangement most shelves use.
