What is this calculator?

Reading a few books a month feels modest until you total it across decades. This calculator turns your monthly pace into yearly, five year, ten year and lifetime book counts, and shows how many titles are still ahead of you. Add an average reading time per book and it also estimates the hours and days you will spend with a book in your hands.

How does it work?

Your monthly pace is multiplied by twelve for a yearly figure, then by the years already behind you and the years left to your expected lifespan. Hours come from your average reading time per book. Reading speed changes with life, so the totals are a projection of today's habit.

Frequently asked questions

Why does counting start at age 10?+

Independent reading of full books usually gets going around then, so earlier years are left out of the books-so-far figure.

Do audiobooks count?+

If you count them as books you finished, include them. Just use an average time per book that reflects listening speed.

How long does an average book take?+

A 300 page novel at 250 words per minute takes roughly six hours, which is the default here.

What if my reading pace changes?+

The projection assumes today's pace holds. Rerun it whenever your habit shifts to see the new lifetime total.

Is 80 years a good lifespan default?+

It is close to the average in many countries. Change it to whatever figure you prefer and every total updates.
