What is this calculator?

Desk time adds up quietly, an hour at a time, until it becomes a large slice of your life. This calculator takes the hours you sit at a desk each day and the days you do it each week, then turns them into weekly, yearly and lifetime totals, along with the share of your waking hours spent in a chair.

How does it work?

Daily hours multiplied by days per week gives your weekly total, which is scaled across 52.18 weeks for the yearly figure. That yearly figure is multiplied by your expected lifespan for the lifetime total, converted to days, and compared against sixteen waking hours a day.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a day do people sit at a desk?+

Office workers commonly report six to nine hours a day at a desk once meetings, email and admin are counted.

Does this include sitting elsewhere?+

No. It only counts desk time. Sofa, car and mealtime sitting would push the totals much higher.

Why sixteen waking hours?+

Most people sleep around eight hours, so the share of waking life is measured against the other sixteen.

Why 52.18 weeks a year?+

A year is 365.25 days once leap years are included, which works out at 52.1775 weeks.

Is the lifetime figure a prediction?+

No. It assumes today's routine holds for your whole life, which is a useful thought experiment rather than a forecast.
