What is this calculator?

This calculator converts your daily step count into real distance. Give it your typical steps per day, your step length and your age, and it shows the ground you cover each day, each year and across your life so far. It even compares your total to a lap of the Earth, which is a surprisingly reachable target for a regular walker.

How does it work?

Your average daily steps are multiplied by your average step length to calculate the total distance you walk each day. That distance is then projected over weeks, months, years, and your lifetime based on your age. Results can be viewed in either miles (mi) or kilometres (km), and are converted instantly when you switch units. For fun, the calculator also compares your lifetime distance to well-known real-world journeys and landmarks.

Frequently asked questions

What is an average step length?+

About 0.78 m for adults. Taller people stride further, and step length shortens on stairs or rough ground.

How do I measure my own step length?+

Walk ten normal steps, measure the distance covered in metres and divide by ten.

Does the lifetime figure include childhood?+

It applies today's step count across every year of your age, so early years are approximated rather than measured.

How far around is the Earth?+

About 40,075 km at the equator, which is the figure used for the comparison.

Is 10,000 steps a day a real target?+

It began as a marketing slogan, but research suggests real health benefits start well below it, around 7,000 steps.
