What is this calculator?

This calculator estimates the breaths behind you and the breaths still to come. Enter your age, your average breathing rate and the lifespan you expect, and it shows totals per hour, per day, per year and across your whole life. Breathing is the most automatic thing you do, so seeing the count written out is quietly startling.

How does it work?

Breaths per minute are multiplied by sixty for the hourly figure, by 1,440 for the daily one and by 365.25 days for the yearly total. Your age and expected lifespan then scale that into lifetime and remaining counts. Real rates change with sleep and exercise, so treat it as an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal breathing rate?+

Twelve to twenty breaths a minute at rest for a healthy adult. Children breathe considerably faster.

How many breaths does a person take in a lifetime?+

Around 600 to 700 million at an average rate over eighty years.

Does sleep change the rate?+

Yes, breathing slows during deep sleep and speeds up with exercise, so the average smooths both extremes.

Why does the total so far differ from the lifetime figure?+

The lifetime number covers your full expected life, while the total so far only counts the years you have lived.

Is this a medical measurement?+

No. It is an estimate built from a flat average and should not be used for any health decision.
