What is this calculator?

This calculator turns an everyday habit into a lifetime tally. Enter how often you smile on an average day, your age and the lifespan you expect, and it returns the smiles behind you, the smiles ahead and your yearly rate. Most people smile far more than they realise, and seeing the total written out is a cheerful way to measure a life.

How does it work?

Your daily smiles are multiplied by 365.25 days for the yearly figure, then scaled by your age for the total so far and by the years remaining for what's ahead. The hourly average simply divides your daily count across sixteen waking hours. Everything is an estimate based on the number you enter.

Frequently asked questions

How many times does the average person smile a day?+

Estimates for adults usually land between 15 and 20 times a day, while young children are often quoted at several hundred. Use whatever number feels honest for you.

Why divide by 16 hours for the hourly rate?+

Most people sleep around eight hours, so spreading your smiles across sixteen waking hours gives a more realistic per-hour figure.

Does a polite smile count?+

That is up to you. The calculator only works with the daily number you enter, so include or exclude social smiles as you prefer.

Why 365.25 days in a year?+

It accounts for leap years, which keeps lifetime totals from drifting over several decades.

Is the lifetime total accurate?+

It is an estimate. It assumes today's habit holds for your whole life, and smiling frequency changes a lot with age and circumstance.
