What is this calculator?

Shoes wear out by distance, not by calendar. This calculator turns your daily step count into yearly walking distance, then works out how many pairs that distance wears through each year, how many you have already used, and how many pairs you are likely to buy across your lifetime. Results switch between miles and kilometres.

How does it work?

Daily steps become a yearly distance using an average stride length. That distance is divided by the mileage your shoes survive to give pairs per year. Multiplying by your age gives pairs already worn out, and by your expected lifespan gives the lifetime and remaining totals.

Frequently asked questions

How many miles should a pair of shoes last?+

Running shoes are usually retired between 300 and 500 miles. Everyday trainers often stretch further because the impact is lower.

How is my walking distance worked out?+

Your daily steps are multiplied by an average stride of about 76cm, then scaled across a year.

Can I switch to kilometres?+

Yes. The unit selector converts every distance and shoe lifespan figure instantly. Miles is the default.

Does running count?+

Include running steps in your daily total, but note that running wears shoes faster, so lower the shoe lifespan a little.

Why does the lifetime number look high?+

It assumes you keep walking the same amount every year until your expected lifespan, which few people do exactly.
