What is this calculator?

This calculator projects your walking habit across a whole life. Enter your average steps per day, your age and the lifespan you expect, and it returns steps per year, your lifetime total, the steps still ahead of you and how many marathons all that walking adds up to. It reframes an ordinary daily number into something that feels genuinely enormous.

How does it work?

Daily steps are multiplied by 365.25 to give a yearly figure, then by your expected lifespan for the lifetime total and by the years remaining for what is left. The marathon comparison converts steps to distance at a 0.78 m stride and divides by 42.195 km.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps does an average person take in a life?+

Roughly 150 to 200 million, depending on activity level and lifespan.

Where does the marathon figure come from?+

Steps are converted to distance using a 0.78 m stride, then divided by the 42.195 km marathon distance.

Should I use my fitness tracker average?+

Yes. A monthly average from a phone or watch is the most accurate input you can give.

Does step count fall with age?+

Usually it does after middle age, so the lifetime total here is a little optimistic for most people.

Why 365.25 days a year?+

It accounts for leap years, which keeps long lifetime totals from drifting.
