What is this calculator?

This calculator estimates your lifetime handwashing count. Enter how many times you wash your hands on a typical day, your age and your expected lifespan, and it returns washes per year, your total so far and the number still ahead. A small daily habit that turns into a surprisingly large number over decades.

How does it work?

Washes per day are multiplied by 365.25 for a yearly total, then by your age for the lifetime figure and by your remaining years for what is to come. Habits shift with jobs, seasons and health, so a single daily average keeps the estimate simple.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash my hands?+

Health bodies suggest washing before eating, after the bathroom, after public transport and whenever hands look dirty, which lands most people around six to ten times a day.

Does hand sanitiser count?+

Not here. This counts soap-and-water washes, though you can include sanitiser if you prefer a combined total.

Why 365.25 days a year?+

It accounts for leap years, which keeps multi-decade totals accurate.

How much water does that use?+

A twenty-second wash uses roughly two litres with the tap running, so multiply your yearly figure by two for a rough litre count.

Are remaining washes a prediction?+

No. They project your current rate across the lifespan you entered, nothing more.
