What is this calculator?

This calculator adds up the steps you take upward. Enter the stairs you climb on a typical day, your age and your expected lifespan, and it returns stairs per year, your lifetime total, the climbs still ahead and the vertical height that all adds up to. A neat way to see everyday movement as real elevation.

How does it work?

Daily stairs are multiplied by 365.25 for a yearly total, then by your age and remaining years. Height assumes an average step rise of 17.5 centimetres, converted into metres and kilometres. Step heights differ between buildings, so the elevation is an approximation.

Frequently asked questions

How many stairs does an average person climb?+

Around 30 to 60 steps a day for most people, though anyone living upstairs or working in an office tower climbs far more.

Do I count going down too?+

No, this counts steps climbed upward. Descending takes far less effort and adds no height.

What step height is used?+

17.5 centimetres, a common average for residential and commercial stairs.

How does that compare to a mountain?+

Mount Everest rises about 8.8 kilometres above sea level, so compare your kilometres climbed against that.

Is this a fitness measurement?+

No. It is an estimate for perspective, not a substitute for a step tracker or health advice.
